Is Claude better than ChatGPT for document analysis?
For long, dense documents, Claude is the stronger reader. Give it a 200-page credit agreement, a limited partnership agreement or a CIM, and it keeps the whole document in view, answers from the text and says when the text does not answer the question.
Ask both for the change-of-control clause in a contract and both will find it. Ask which defined terms change its meaning, or whether a later amendment overrides it, and Claude is more likely to follow the trail to the right answer. On the documents investment firms read most, that care is worth more than speed.
ChatGPT reads well too, and it is good at the mixed jobs around documents: turning tables into a spreadsheet, combining a document with web research and producing a quick summary. If your documents are short and your questions are broad, you will notice little difference.
With either tool, ask for the page or section behind every answer and check the ones that matter. Keep confidential documents on a business plan, Claude Team or ChatGPT Business at $20 a seat a month billed annually, where neither company trains on your files by default.
The fastest way to decide uses a document you know well. Pick one you have read closely, ask both the five hardest questions you can think of, and see which gets them right.
