Is Claude better than ChatGPT for financial analysis?
For financial analysis that starts from documents, Claude has the edge. Give it three years of financial statements, the notes and a management presentation, and it reads them together, ties the numbers across them and flags where they disagree. It is also quicker to say a figure is missing than to invent one, and in finance that habit matters more than any benchmark score.
ChatGPT has the edge on range. It is quick at explaining a ratio, sketching an analysis plan, researching a sector and writing the first draft of the commentary. For an analyst who jumps between ten different tasks a day, that versatility counts, and many finance people already know it well.
On the mechanics, they are close. Both work inside Excel, Claude through Claude for Excel and ChatGPT through OpenAI's own add-in. Both can write and run code on a file you upload, so the math can be checked instead of trusted. For current prices or estimates, connect a market data service you already license instead of relying on a web search.
The rule matters more than the choice: the model drafts, and a person checks every number that leaves the building. Ask for the page or cell behind each figure. Claude for Excel gives cell-level citations with its answers, which makes that check fast.
Pick Claude if your analysis starts from long documents and messy workbooks. Pick ChatGPT if your team needs a fast generalist and already uses it.
