Claude Training for Beginners: A First Month for Finance Teams Who Have Never Used AI

TLDR: Claude training for beginners on a finance team should start free, with Anthropic's Claude 101 course on Claude Academy (13 lessons, about 2.5 hours), then move to four weeks of practice on the team's own work under one rule: work data goes only into the firm's business account. Paid training pays off when a whole team starts at once, on its own documents, with records kept. WorkWise Solutions trains finance teams this way: a $6,500 beginners cohort for up to 12 people at a portfolio company, or a $7,500 Executive Briefing and a $12,500 intensive at an investment firm.
I run Claude training for beginners through WorkWise Solutions, live online and on the team's own work. At a portfolio company, a beginners cohort costs $6,500 for up to 12 people. At an investment firm, the $7,500 Executive Briefing sets the rules with leadership, then a $12,500 intensive trains up to 12 people on the team's own redacted documents.

1. The Short Answer
Claude training for beginners should start free, with Anthropic's own courses, and then move to four weeks of practice on your own work. One firm rule comes before any of it: work data goes only into the firm's business account, never a personal one.
The courses are on Claude Academy, Anthropic's course site, and its FAQ is plain about the cost of entry: "You don't need a paid plan, and you don't need a work account." Claude 101, the first course, takes about 2.5 hours.
Claude Academy has no course aimed at finance teams. The practice month covers that part: your own month-end files, memos and spreadsheets, twenty minutes a day.
Courses teach what the buttons do. Four weeks on real work build the habit.
2. Start With the Free Courses
Claude Academy describes itself as "Free courses, tutorials, and use cases from Anthropic's education team." Sign in with a free Claude account and each finished course earns a completion badge, which you can download as a PDF or add to LinkedIn.
Five courses suit a beginner, with Anthropic's lesson counts and lengths:
- Claude 101: 13 lessons, about 2.5 hours. Take it first.
- AI Capabilities and Limitations: 13 lessons, about 3.5 hours, on what AI does well and where it goes wrong.
- AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations: 14 lessons, about 4 hours.
- Introduction to Claude Cowork: 14 lessons, about 2.5 hours. Cowork is the part of Claude that works through tasks with several steps, and the course covers scheduled tasks, jobs Claude runs on a timetable.
- AI Fluency for Small Businesses: 8 lessons, about 3.5 hours, for a small portfolio company's team.
Two short tutorials fit finance work, though neither earns a badge: "Getting started with Claude in Excel," about 7 minutes, and "How to use Claude in Excel for accounting: Revenue model validation," about 20 minutes, both on the tutorials page.
A badge records a finished course. Claude certification exams are a separate, paid program open only to organizations in Anthropic's partner network, so a beginner cannot sit one alone.
3. A First Month, Week by Week
Plan on twenty minutes a day of real work for four weeks:
Learn the firm's data rule and take Claude 101. Then ask Claude to summarize a document you know well, and check what it got right.
Use real work the rule allows: a variance file, a lender report, a contract. Ask for a summary, then a first draft, then a check of a draft you wrote.
Put the files you reuse into a project, with a short note on how you like the work done, so the next chat starts from them.
Ask Claude first on every recurring task. Keep a short list of what it does well for you and what it gets wrong.
Anthropic's own finance team gives the same advice for week one. Alice Fong, of its corporate finance and strategy team, writes: "If you're on the fence, start simple: ask Claude to read a doc and summarize it, then keep pushing the boundaries."
Week three uses a project, which Anthropic describes as a self-contained workspace with its own chat history and knowledge base: the files Claude can refer to in every chat there. Projects work on every plan, free accounts included, but work files still belong in the firm's business account.
Week four is about frequency. A tool you open every day becomes a habit; one you save for hard problems stays a novelty.
4. The Mistakes Beginners Make
Watch for four mistakes:
- Putting client data in a personal account is the costliest. Free, Pro and Max are consumer plans, where chats can train models unless the user opts out. On business plans (Team and Enterprise), Anthropic does not use inputs or outputs to train its models by default (Privacy Center).
- Trusting a number without checking it is how errors reach the board. Anthropic does not recommend Claude for Excel for "Audit-critical calculations without verification" (Claude for Excel docs). Its answers carry cell-level citations, links to the cells they came from, so tie each figure to its source.
- Asking for facts Claude cannot know gets you a guess. It has not seen this morning's bank balance, a borrower's last covenant test or what the partners decided on Tuesday. Attach the source and ask Claude to quote from it.
- Giving up after one bad answer wastes the month. A thin question gets a thin answer, so ask again with the document attached, the format you want and an example of a good result.
A data rule and better questions fix all four.
5. When Paid Training Is Worth It
Free courses suit one person learning alone. Paid training earns its fee when a whole team starts at once, when the firm needs written rules and a record of who learned what, and when people should learn on their own documents instead of generic examples.
Twelve people in the same sessions leave with the same habits and the same rules. Twelve people learning alone leave with twelve versions.
WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, runs Claude training for beginners live online, on their own work. At a portfolio company, a Portfolio Company Cohort costs $6,500 for up to 12 people, grouped by function and by skill level (beginners, regular users, power users), on the company's own work and tools.
At an investment firm, the 90-minute Executive Briefing, $7,500 for up to 50 people, sets the rules with leadership. Then a $12,500 Deal Team Intensive (with an IR, Finance and Legal track) or Credit-Team Intensive trains up to 12 people in three 2-hour sessions on the team's own redacted documents. Not a fit if one person is learning alone: start with Claude 101.
6. Where to Start
- Today, sign in to Claude Academy with a free Claude account and start Claude 101.
- This week, get the firm's data rule in writing. If there is none, ask for one before you open a work file in Claude.
- Pick one document you handle every week for week two.
- Block twenty minutes a day in your calendar for four weeks.
- On day 30, write down what Claude does well for you and what it gets wrong, and send it to your manager.
For a whole team starting together, Training Your Team on Claude sets out the wider plan.
"Claude 101 is the starting point for anyone bringing Claude into their everyday work."

- •The costliest beginner mistake is putting client data into a personal Claude account, because consumer plans can train models on chats unless the user opts out, while business plans do not by default.
- •Anthropic does not recommend Claude for Excel for audit-critical calculations without verification, so a beginner ties every figure Claude produces to its source before using it.
