Is Claude better than ChatGPT for credit analysis?
For credit analysis, Claude is usually stronger, because the hard part of credit work is reading definitions. Whether a borrower passes its leverage test depends on how the credit agreement defines EBITDA, which add-backs it allows and for how long, and what counts as debt. Claude is careful with that kind of language and points out when a definition is ambiguous instead of picking a reading for you.
On its financial services page, Anthropic describes credit underwriting in one line: Claude “pulls spreads, runs ratios, and structures the writeup while you own the credit decision.” In practice that means spreading a borrower's statements into your Excel template, recalculating covenants each quarter from the compliance certificate and drafting the credit memo for an analyst to edit.
ChatGPT handles the same tasks competently and is the faster generalist for industry research, peer comparisons and questions about a borrower's sector. It has an Excel add-in too. Neither company sells a product built for direct lenders yet, so both need your templates and covenant definitions loaded before the output looks like your firm's work.
Whichever you choose, check every spread against the source statements, since one misread line item flows straight into the leverage ratio. Keep borrower files on a business plan, with each borrower in its own project, because credit files often hold confidential and sometimes material non-public information.
Pick Claude if your analysts spend their days in credit agreements and borrower packages. Pick ChatGPT if they already use it and the work is mostly research.
