Is Claude better than ChatGPT for investment memos?

For investment committee memos, Claude is usually the better drafter, because a good memo is built from the deal file and Claude is the more careful reader of one. It reads the CIM, the model output, diligence notes and call transcripts together, keeps the numbers consistent from section to section and writes in a measured tone that does not oversell the deal.

Anthropic's free private equity plugin has an IC memo command. The bigger gain comes from making it yours: your template, your section order, your return thresholds and your house style, saved as a skill so every associate starts from the same draft. On Claude Team and Enterprise, an administrator can share that skill across the firm.

ChatGPT writes clean first drafts quickly and is strong on the research sections: market context, the competitive landscape, comparable deals from public sources. Firms that built a memo assistant as a custom GPT have a deadline, because custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026 and OpenAI is moving them to plugins.

Either way, the model drafts and the deal team decides. The thesis, the risks you accept and the recommendation are a partner's to write. The model's most useful job is to check that every number in those sections matches the model and the diligence findings.

To choose, have both draft the memo for a deal you already took to committee, then compare each draft against the memo you actually wrote.
