Is Claude better than ChatGPT for investment teams?

Both are good enough for an investment team. The gap shows up job by job, and it is fairly consistent: Claude wins the jobs built on long documents and careful numbers, and ChatGPT wins on range and on the market data OpenAI now bundles for finance.

Claude's edge is depth. It reads a CIM, an annual report or a manager's quarterly letter in one pass and answers from the text. Claude for Excel changes assumptions without breaking formulas and shows the cells behind each answer. Claude can also work through a long multi-step task, such as building one comparison table from twenty documents. Anthropic publishes free finance plugins too, including one for private equity with commands for screening, diligence checklists and IC memos.

ChatGPT's edge is breadth. It is fast at research, brainstorming and turning rough notes into a first draft, and it has its own Excel add-in, generally available since May 2026. ChatGPT for Financial Services comes with PitchBook, Daloopa, LSEG News and Crunchbase data built in, though OpenAI sells it to eligible institutions and built it for banks and equity research first.

Cost does not separate them. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business both cost $20 a seat a month billed annually, and neither trains on your data by default. One date to know: custom GPTs retire on December 11, 2026, and OpenAI is moving them to plugins. If your team built its workflows on custom GPTs, they move this quarter whichever tool you pick.

To choose, give two analysts both tools for two weeks and the same five real jobs: summarize a CIM, check a model, draft a memo section, compare three managers, prepare for a management call. Score every answer for accuracy against what you already know. Keep the one your team still trusts at the end of week two.
