Is Claude better than ChatGPT for private credit?
For most private credit teams, Claude earns the seat, because credit work lives in long legal and financial documents. A credit agreement, its amendments and a year of borrower reporting can run to hundreds of pages, and the answer to a covenant question usually sits in the definitions section, dozens of pages away from the covenant itself. Claude is the more careful reader of that kind of material, and it will tell you a definition is ambiguous before it guesses.
Neither company has built a product for direct lenders yet. Anthropic's finance plugins include private equity, fund administration and operations, but no lending plugin so far. On its financial services page, Anthropic describes credit work in one line: Claude “pulls spreads, runs ratios, and structures the writeup while you own the credit decision.” OpenAI's finance product was built for investment banks and equity research first.
Both have Excel add-ins, which matters in a market that S&P Global described in January 2026 as often managed in Excel. Both read a borrower's monthly package if you upload it. Loan administration systems such as WSO, Allvue and Hypercore are not listed in Anthropic's connector directory, so on Claude that data comes in as an export until someone builds a connector.
Records decide the plan. If your firm is an SEC-registered adviser, assume your compliance team will want the conversations kept. On Claude, only Enterprise has audit logs and the Compliance API that archive vendors plug into. ChatGPT Enterprise has a compliance log platform that keeps 30 days, so you export from it. The business plans, Claude Team and ChatGPT Business at $20 a seat a month billed annually, do not offer those compliance feeds.
A sensible setup for a credit fund: Claude as the reading and drafting tool for the deal and portfolio teams, on Team or Enterprise depending on your records needs. Choose ChatGPT instead if your team already works in it every day. A tool people already use beats a better one they ignore.
