Is Claude better than ChatGPT for family offices?

For a family office, the plan you choose matters more than the model. Citi's 2026 report on AI in the family office put it plainly: “Data security and privacy is the main concern for family offices and the primary barrier to broader AI adoption.” Claude and ChatGPT both meet that concern on a business plan, and neither does on a personal one.

On Claude Team or ChatGPT Business, both $20 a seat a month billed annually, neither company trains on your data by default. On the free and personal plans, both can train on what you type unless the setting is switched off. If a principal or family member pastes statements into a personal account today, fix that first.

Beyond privacy, the difference is the work. Claude is the more careful reader of long documents: a fund's subscription documents, a private placement memorandum, a trust deed, a manager's quarterly letter. It works inside Excel, where many offices still consolidate their advisers' reports by hand, and Addepar has offered a Claude connector in beta since September 2026. ChatGPT is the broader everyday assistant for research, quick questions and first drafts, and it suits a principal who already uses it at home.

Most single-family offices are not SEC-registered, so record-keeping is lighter than at an RIA. If yours is registered, or you run a multi-family office, the Enterprise plans are where the compliance logs and archive connections live, on both products.

A good default for a small office: one business plan for everyone, picked by what the principal already uses, plus a one-page rule on what never goes in. If the office's work is mostly reading investment documents, pick Claude.
