Do you need Claude Enterprise for Claude for Financial Advisors?

By Dr. Leigh Coney, Founder of WorkWise Solutions · Updated September 28, 2026

Short answer: Anthropic recommends Enterprise for registered investment advisers, because Enterprise includes the audit logs that support recordkeeping. The plugin's files are open source and plugins run on every paid plan, so it will install on Team. But Team has no audit log export and no Compliance API, which is what archives such as Smarsh use to capture Claude activity.

For an RIA, Enterprise adds three things that matter. Audit logs, which record events such as sign-ins, file uploads and chat creation for the past 180 days (metadata, not content). The Compliance API, which pulls the content itself, including chats, files and Cowork sessions, into your own tools. And group-level control over who can use which plugin.

The Compliance API is the piece your archive needs. Smarsh launched capture for Claude Enterprise on top of it in May 2026. Rule 204-2 generally asks you to keep advertisements and client communications for five years, so a 180-day event log is no substitute.

The catch is size. Anthropic lists Enterprise with a 20-seat minimum at $20 per seat per month, and the typical adviser serving individual clients has about eight employees. A small firm pays for seats nobody uses.

On Team, the plugin still works, and your CCO can require that final versions of client-facing outputs go into the archive by procedure. That is weaker than automated capture, and the policy should say so.

Before you decide, ask Anthropic and each vendor whether their connector is available on your plan, Schwab's in particular. Then write the decision down with the reason. An examiner will ask why you chose what you chose.
