Is Claude better than ChatGPT for financial advisors?
By Dr. Leigh Coney, Founder of WorkWise Solutions · Updated November 4, 2026
Short answer: For running an advisory practice, Claude has the clearer case in November 2026, because Anthropic built a product for it: Claude for Financial Advisors, a plugin that connects to Schwab, Orion, Wealthbox, Addepar and other advisor systems and asks the advisor before it writes anything back. ChatGPT is the tool more advisors already use, and OpenAI's finance product is aimed at banks and research teams. For records, either one needs its Enterprise plan.
Compare products, not models. Anthropic launched Claude for Financial Advisors on September 14, 2026: a plugin with skills for meeting prep, meeting follow-up, compliance pre-checks on client material, prospect intake, rebalance reviews, alternatives and estate briefs, plus connectors to the systems an RIA runs on. Its page now lists 22 partners, from Orion, which brings in Redtail CRM data, to Addepar, Wealthbox and MoneyGuide. Schwab's connector went live in Schwab Advisor Center on October 28, read-only, with a firm principal approving activation.
OpenAI's finance product, ChatGPT for Financial Services, launched on September 10, 2026 as a separate plan built on ChatGPT Enterprise. It is aimed at banks and research teams, with data such as PitchBook, FactSet and SEC filings rather than custodians and advisor CRMs, and OpenAI says availability depends on the size and type of your organization. ChatGPT's strength with advisors is familiarity: in a 2025 survey reported by InvestmentNews, ChatGPT had the largest share of advisors' AI use, 35.71 percent, while Anthropic was among the highest rated, at 8.10 out of 10.
For an RIA, records matter more than features. Rule 204-2 requires an adviser to keep required records for five years, the first two in an appropriate office, and both vendors put content capture on their top plan. Anthropic recommends Enterprise for registered investment advisers "because it includes the audit logs that support recordkeeping", and OpenAI's Compliance Platform is available to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, keeps its logs for 30 days and feeds archiving partners such as Global Relay and Smarsh. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business offer neither.
So for a small RIA the choice is practical. If you want AI working inside your client systems, start with Claude for Financial Advisors on a plan your CCO can supervise. If your advisors only need help drafting emails and summarizing meeting notes, which is how most RIAs use AI today according to Schwab's 2026 RIA study, either tool works on a business plan, and the deciding factor is which one your people already use. Either way, client data stays out of personal Free, Plus and Pro accounts.
I set it up for RIAs. Through WorkWise Solutions, the Claude for Financial Advisors setup covers the plan decision, the connectors, your firm's rules in the skills and archive capture, at a fixed price: $10,000 for firms of 1 to 10 people or $20,000 for 11 to 25, in two to four weeks.
