TLDR: The best AI for a family office in 2026 is Claude or ChatGPT on a business plan, chosen by where the office's documents live. One rule comes first: no family data in free or personal accounts, where the office has no admin control and no records. Offices already on Microsoft 365 can use Copilot instead, after cleaning up who can open which files. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business cost $20 a standard seat a month, billed annually. WorkWise Solutions does this work, starting with a $12,500 AI Readiness Sprint for offices of up to 20 people.

Choosing AI for your family office?

I help family offices pick between Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot, then set it up so family data stays on a business plan. Through WorkWise Solutions, the AI Readiness Sprint is $12,500 for offices of up to 20 people, and a full setup starts at $25,000 for 1 to 10 people. I sell no licenses and take no referral fees, so nothing rides on which tool you pick.

1. The Short Answer

For most family offices, the best AI platform in 2026 is Claude or ChatGPT on a business plan, chosen by where the office's documents live. One rule sits above that choice: no family data in free or personal accounts.

An office already on Microsoft 365 can use Microsoft 365 Copilot instead, after it cleans up who can open which files, because Copilot shows each person every file they can already open.

A business plan is the paid version an office buys for its staff. On a personal account, from any vendor, the office has no admin control, no records and no say over what an employee keeps.

Citi's May 2026 report AI in the Family Office calls data security and privacy "the main concern for family offices and the primary barrier to broader AI adoption."

2. Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot for a Family Office

The three side by side, personal versions first:

Each vendor's own pages, linked in the table, read November 2026. The fits row is this guide's judgment.
What to check Claude ChatGPT Microsoft 365 Copilot
Free or personal version On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic can train on chats and keep them, de-identified, up to 5 years unless the user opts out. On Free, Plus and Pro, training is on until the user switches it off; deleted chats are permanently deleted within 30 days. The updated personal Copilot app does not train on prompts, responses or files.
Business plan and price Team: $20 a standard seat a month billed annually, $25 monthly, 2 to 150 seats. Enterprise: $20 a seat a month, 20-seat minimum, plus usage fees. Business: $20 a standard seat a month billed annually, $25 monthly, 2 to 200 seats. Enterprise: custom pricing. $30 a user a month paid yearly, on top of Microsoft 365. Copilot Business (up to 300 users): $21.
Training on business data None by default. Anthropic can keep a chat someone rates thumbs up or down for up to 5 years and train on it; an owner can switch ratings off. None by default on Business and Enterprise. None: Microsoft says it does not use prompts, responses or the office data Copilot reads for training.
How long chats are kept Deleted chats leave Anthropic's storage within 30 days; Enterprise can set its own period (30 days minimum). Admins on Business and Enterprise decide. In each user's mailbox, where Microsoft 365 retention policies can cover them.
Who can see what An admin controls seats and connectors (links to other systems); Enterprise adds permissions by role. An admin controls seats; Enterprise adds access by role. Each person sees every office file they can already open.
Fits an office that Reports on Addepar (a Claude connector in beta), or liked Claude better in a test Already uses ChatGPT on personal accounts, or liked it better in a test Runs on Microsoft 365, wants AI in Outlook, Word and Teams, and has tidied file permissions
Who sets it up The vendor's setup guides, your IT provider, or an advisor (for example WorkWise Solutions: AI Readiness Sprint $12,500 for offices of up to 20 people, setup from $25,000 for 1 to 10 people).

All three business plans keep office data out of model training by default. The bigger choice is the one in the first row: a personal account or a business plan.

3. Which Fits Your Office

Start from where your documents live.

If the office runs on Microsoft 365

Copilot works inside Outlook, Word and Teams, and Copilot Chat, which answers from the web, comes with eligible Microsoft 365 licenses. Tidy file permissions first: if an old folder of trust documents is open to everyone, Copilot can surface it to anyone who asks.

If your numbers live in a reporting platform

Pick a tool your platform connects to. Addepar has a Claude connector in beta, an early release, and Asora Connect links Asora's data to Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Gemini.

If your work arrives as PDFs and email

If people already use ChatGPT on personal accounts, ChatGPT Business keeps the habit and changes the terms. If nobody does, try Claude Team and ChatGPT Business on the same five documents, with names removed, for a week. Keep the one people open without being asked.

Both start at two seats. In Citi's 2026 Global Family Office Report (351 offices, September 2026), approximately 62% of offices employed six or fewer full-time professionals; Claude Enterprise starts at 20 seats.

An office on Google Workspace has a fourth option in Gemini, whose prompts and responses Google Vault, Google's records tool, can keep on Business Plus and above.

4. Family Office Software With AI Built In

Some offices already pay for software with AI inside it. Addepar offers Addison for plain-language analysis and AI document extraction with human checks. Asora starts at $900 a month and says, "Most family offices are live within four weeks."

If your questions are mostly about data already in the platform, start with its own AI. For drafting family letters, summarizing outside documents or research, add Claude or ChatGPT on a business plan.

Citi's May 2026 interviews suggest the market offers "no perfect single solution for family offices to buy."

RSM noted in October 2025 that "adoption increasingly arrives through existing systems rather than deliberate internal decisions." So the privacy line has to cover the AI inside the office's reporting, ledger and bill pay software too.

5. Set It Up Before Anyone Uses It

Before the first login:

  • Buy business-plan seats for everyone who will use AI, and move office work off personal accounts that day.
  • Write the privacy line: one page on which family data may go into which tool, drawn from the family office AI policy template.
  • On Claude Team, have an owner switch off chat ratings. On ChatGPT Business, have an admin set how long chats are kept.
  • On Microsoft 365, tidy file permissions, and decide whether to keep the Claude models that Microsoft switches on by default inside Copilot for most commercial customers outside the EU, EFTA and UK.
  • Train everyone who will use it, family members included, on the office's own documents with names removed, and name one person who owns it.

6. Where to Start

  1. Ask who already uses AI for office work, and on which account.
  2. List where your documents live: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, a reporting platform, or email and PDFs.
  3. Pick the matching business plan from the table in section 2.
  4. Put the privacy line and settings from section 5 in place.
  5. Run two jobs on it for 60 to 90 days, then decide what to add.

Where WorkWise fits

WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, makes this choice with an office in its AI Readiness Sprint: $12,500 for offices of up to 20 people, one to two weeks, ending in a vendor-neutral choice across Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Gemini and a 90-day plan. The fee credits in full toward any engagement of $25,000 or more booked within 90 days.

Setup on Claude, ChatGPT Enterprise or Microsoft 365 Copilot starts at $25,000 for 1 to 10 people, and the AI Operating Partner retainer keeps an advisor on call from $10,000 a month.

WorkWise sells no licenses and takes no referral fees. Not a fit if your office is two or three people who only need a business plan bought and switched on.

"On personal workspaces with ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro, data sharing is enabled by default."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ChatGPT safe for a family office?

ChatGPT suits a family office on a business plan with a written data rule, and it is the wrong place for family data on a personal account. OpenAI says that on ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro, data sharing is enabled by default until the user switches off Improve the model for everyone, and the office gets no admin control or records. On ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, OpenAI does not use workspace content to train its models by default, and admins control how long chats are kept. The office still decides which family data goes in.

Should a family office use Claude or ChatGPT?

Either works on a business plan, so choose by where the office's documents live and what its people already use. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business both cost $20 a standard seat a month billed annually, both start at two seats, and neither trains on business data by default. ChatGPT fits a team that already uses it on personal accounts. Claude fits an office whose reporting runs on Addepar, which has a Claude connector in beta. Otherwise, test both on the same documents for a week. An office on Microsoft 365 can use Copilot instead.

Who can set up AI for a family office?

A small office can follow the vendor's own setup guides, and an office that outsources IT can ask its IT provider; in RBC and Campden Wealth's 2026 North America report, 56% of offices outsource IT services. Family office technology consultants and boutique AI advisors also do this work. WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, runs a $12,500 AI Readiness Sprint for offices of up to 20 people to pick the tool, then sets up Claude, ChatGPT Enterprise or Microsoft 365 Copilot from $25,000 for 1 to 10 people.
