Claude for Small Business: What It Does at a PE-Backed Company and Who Sets It Up

TLDR: Claude for Small Business is an Anthropic plugin that does routine finance work inside the tools a PE-backed company uses, such as QuickBooks and Gusto: it drafts the month-end close packet, checks that cash covers payroll and prepares bill runs, with nothing sent or paid until a person approves. Anthropic built it for very small businesses, so a larger company on an ERP does better with Claude Team or Enterprise set up around that system. Anthropic lists no separate fee; you pay for the Claude plan. WorkWise Solutions writes the rules and trains the team: a $7,500 AI policy plus a $6,500 finance cohort.

Claude for Small Business at a portfolio company?

I don't sell a separate Claude for Small Business package. For one company, WorkWise Solutions writes the AI rules through Secure AI Adoption, $7,500, and trains up to 12 people in a $6,500 finance and accounting cohort on the company's own month-end files. Across several companies, the Portfolio AI Program costs $25,000 a company for 1 to 4, $22,500 for 5 to 9 and $20,000 for 10 or more.

1. The Short Answer

Claude for Small Business is a plugin, an add-on from Anthropic (the company that makes Claude), that drafts the month-end close packet, checks that cash covers payroll and prepares the bill run inside software a small company already uses, such as QuickBooks and Gusto. At a PE-backed company the controller can switch it on in a few clicks, but the rules on data and approvals come first.

Nothing goes out until a person approves it, per Anthropic's plugin page. Anthropic built it for very small businesses: "Most owners using it run businesses under ten people, many solo," says its small business page.

It can still fit a roll-up add-on, a lower middle market company or a family business with a small finance team on QuickBooks, HubSpot and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. A bigger portfolio company with an ERP, one system for its books, orders and stock, does better with Claude Team or Enterprise set up around that system.

Anthropic lists no separate fee for the plugin. The Claude plan is what you pay.

2. What Anthropic Launched

Anthropic announced the plugin on May 13, 2026, as "a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows that put Claude inside the tools small businesses depend on." A connector lets Claude read a system such as QuickBooks. A workflow is a ready-made job.

At launch it connected to QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, among others. Anthropic's September 15 update names Gusto, Stripe, Xero, NetSuite and Salesforce among the newer ones and counts more than 900,000 installs. Per Anthropic's plugin page, November 2026, it holds 43 ready-to-run workflows and 37 partner connectors.

Access follows the permissions people already have: "If an employee can't see something in QuickBooks or Drive today, they can't see it through Claude," says Anthropic's launch post. The plugin's own files add that it "does not provide financial, tax, legal, or HR advice."

3. The Workflows That Matter at a Portfolio Company

Each workflow is a slash command, a short name you type, such as /close-month. The finance ones read QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, MYOB or Zoho Books. Start with these:

Workflow names, descriptions and connections from Anthropic's plugin page, tutorial, plugin source and September 2026 update, read November 2026. The last column is WorkWise Solutions' recommendation.
Workflow What it does What it connects to Who checks it
/close-month Builds a month-end close packet for your accountant Your accounting system The controller, against the books
/plan-payroll Checks that cash covers the next payroll, drafts reminders on overdue invoices and stages the run for you to submit Your accounting system, and payroll in Gusto The owner or CFO, who submits the run
/pay-the-bills Codes bills and prepares a payment run Your accounting system Whoever approves payments today
/tax-prep Prepares quarterly taxes or 1099s Your accounting system Your outside accountant, before anything is filed
/report-pack Builds scheduled reports The tools you connected The CFO, before it reaches the board
/monday-brief Writes a one-page business brief The tools you connected The CEO, before acting on any number
/restock Prepares reorders The tools you connected The operations lead, before an order goes out

Every workflow starts in approval mode, and some stop short of the last step: Claude stages payroll in Gusto for you to submit.

On Team plans, though, Claude Cowork, the part of Claude that runs these jobs, starts new tasks in a mode called Automatically approve by default (Anthropic Help Center). Check both settings before anyone connects the books.

4. What It Costs

Anthropic lists no separate fee for Claude for Small Business. It says the plugin is "available on every paid Claude plan, and we recommend the Team plan for businesses with more than one person."

Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed annually, and Team at $25 a seat a month, or $20 billed annually, for 2 to 150 seats. Five people on Team, an assumed headcount, cost 5 x $20 x 12 = $1,200 a year.

Use Team for a company with staff. The small business page says, "By default, we don't train on your business data on Team and Enterprise plans." Pro is a consumer plan, where chats can train models unless the user opts out (Privacy Center).

Check each connected tool too. Anthropic's tutorial warns, "Some features depend on your plan in a connected tool."

5. Who Sets It Up

Adding the plugin takes a few clicks. The rules take longer.

In Anthropic's own research, "data security was the most-cited barrier to AI adoption" among 503 small business decision-makers, and nearly two-thirds of its workshop attendees asked for hands-on help. Four kinds of help exist:

  • Anthropic's free course, AI Fluency for Small Businesses, runs 8 lessons in about 3.5 hours and ends with a completion badge. It suits an owner or controller with spare hours.
  • The company's IT provider can set up the Team plan and accounts, and set each connector's actions to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked (Anthropic Help Center).
  • The GP's operating team can write one rulebook for the whole portfolio, starting from the one-page policy in the operating partner's Claude kit.
  • A firm from Anthropic's partner network is the route Anthropic points to for setup help. It names Caylent, Loka and Grid Dynamics, among others.
Where WorkWise fits

WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, sells no separate Claude for Small Business package. At one company, Secure AI Adoption costs $7,500: the acceptable-use policy, data-handling rules and a check on which AI tools staff already use. A finance and accounting cohort, $6,500 for up to 12 people, then trains the team on its own work.

Across several companies, the Portfolio AI Program gives each company the policy, one cohort and a Value-Creation Diagnostic (where AI moves EBITDA): $25,000 a company for 1 to 4 companies, $22,500 for 5 to 9 and $20,000 for 10 or more. Not a fit if one person keeps the books and has time for Anthropic's course.

6. Where to Start

  1. Put everyone who touches the books on Team, never personal Pro accounts. If you are still choosing a tool, read Is Claude better than ChatGPT for business?
  2. Write one page of rules: what data goes in, who approves payments and payroll, and who checks numbers.
  3. Add the plugin as Anthropic's tutorial shows: Customize, Plugins, Discover, Small Business, Add. Connect your tools, then run the setup command, /smb-onboard.
  4. Check both approval settings before the first run.
  5. Run /close-month on the next close and have the controller tie every figure to the books.

A bigger company on an ERP should start with Claude for CFOs instead.

"Every workflow starts in approval mode: Claude drafts and stages the work, and nothing sends, posts, or pays until you say so."
