TLDR: The best AI for financial advisors is the one that fits what your RIA already runs: Claude if you want Anthropic's advisor plugin and its CRM and portfolio connections, ChatGPT if your team already works in it, and Microsoft 365 Copilot if the firm runs on Microsoft 365 and wants AI inside Outlook, Word and Teams. Whichever you pick, buy its business plan for the firm and capture the records: free and personal accounts are the real risk to client data. WorkWise Solutions sets up all three for RIAs; a 10-person firm's Claude for Financial Advisors Setup is $10,000.

Choosing AI for your RIA?

I help RIAs choose between Claude, ChatGPT and the Microsoft 365 Copilot they may already pay for, then set it up with records and supervision in place, through AI Consulting for RIAs at WorkWise Solutions. A 10-person firm's Claude for Financial Advisors Setup is $10,000. If you have not picked a tool yet, the $12,500 AI Readiness Sprint makes the platform decision.

1. The Short Answer

The best AI for financial advisors is the one that fits what your RIA already runs.

Claude fits a firm that wants Anthropic's advisor plugin: an add-on with ready-made workflows and connectors (links that let Claude read systems such as your CRM). ChatGPT fits a team that already works in it. Microsoft 365 Copilot fits a firm on Microsoft 365 that wants AI inside Outlook, Word and Teams.

Whichever you pick, buy its business plan for the firm and capture the records. Free and personal accounts are the real risk to client data.

In the T3/Inside Information Software Survey 2026 (March 2026, 2,906 responses), 40.9% of respondents used ChatGPT, 20.5% Microsoft Copilot, 13.6% Google Gemini and 6.2% Claude, up from 3.3% in 2025.

2. Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot Side by Side

Vendor facts from each vendor's own pages, read November 2026 (Claude usage: Anthropic's estimate, via TechTimes). WorkWise prices from its pricing page.
What to check Claude ChatGPT Microsoft 365 Copilot
Business plan and price Team: from $20 a seat a month. Enterprise: $20 a seat a month, 20-seat minimum, plus usage (roughly $70 to $120 per active user a month, by Anthropic's estimate) Business: from $20 a seat a month. Enterprise: custom pricing $30 a user a month paid yearly. Copilot Business, up to 300 users: $21, or $18 the first year on offers made July 1 to December 31, 2026. Both on top of Microsoft 365
Trains on client data by default? No on Team and Enterprise (Anthropic), except a chat someone rates thumbs up or down; owners can turn ratings off No on Business and Enterprise (OpenAI) No. Microsoft says prompts, responses and work data are not used to train the models behind Copilot (Microsoft)
Records and archive capture Enterprise only: the Compliance API feeds each chat to your archive as it happens (Smarsh, Theta Lake, Proofpoint and others). Team: only a manual export Enterprise only: the Compliance Logs Platform keeps 30 days of logs for your archive to pull continuously (Global Relay, Smarsh, Theta Lake). Business: no feed Kept in each user's mailbox under retention policies in Purview, Microsoft's records tool. Global Relay, Smarsh, Theta Lake and Proofpoint capture it; Global Relay needs "an active Copilot license for each user"
Built for advisors? Yes: Claude for Financial Advisors (September 14, 2026), with meeting prep, follow-up and compliance pre-check workflows and connectors to Wealthbox, Orion and Addepar No. OpenAI's finance product targets banks and research teams No advisor version
Works inside Claude's own apps, connected to Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Salesforce and advisor systems ChatGPT's own app, the AI tool advisors use most Outlook, Word and Teams. Copilot Chat, included with eligible licenses, answers from the web
Fits a firm that... wants AI inside its CRM and portfolio systems already works in ChatGPT, mostly on emails and notes runs on Microsoft 365 and tidies file permissions first: Copilot shows each person everything they can already open
Who sets it up The vendor's own guides and support, your IT provider, or an advisor (for example WorkWise Solutions: Claude for Financial Advisors Setup from $10,000; Secure Platform Rollout for ChatGPT Enterprise or Microsoft 365 Copilot from $25,000)

Settle the records row with your CCO before anyone signs up.

3. The Plan Matters More Than the Brand

Client data belongs only on a business plan, where the vendor does not train on it by default and the firm controls who gets a seat. On Claude's personal plans (Free, Pro and Max), Anthropic can train on chats unless the user switches off "Help Improve our AI models" (Anthropic). On ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro, "data sharing is enabled by default," OpenAI says, until the user turns off "Improve the model for everyone."

Even with training off, a personal account leaves the firm no admin control, no records and no say over what an employee keeps. In Schwab's RIA & AI Research Study (January 2026, 533 advisors who custody at Schwab), 70% of advisors using AI were "individuals exploring tools on their own."

Rule 204-2, the SEC's books-and-records rule, makes an adviser keep written communications about its advice for at least five years, so an AI-drafted email about advice is a record once it goes to a client. No SEC or FINRA guidance yet says whether an unsent chat is one; decide that in writing with your CCO.

Anthropic recommends Enterprise for RIAs for its audit logs, which record events but not chat content; the archive feed is the Compliance API.

4. Specialist Tools Advisors Add

Many advisors also run a specialist tool beside the general assistant: in the T3 survey, 42.9% of respondents used an AI note-taker.

Six of them, with their own descriptions and published prices, alphabetically:

  • FP Alpha, for tax, estate and insurance documents: All-In-One plan, $1,995 a year.
  • Holistiplan, for tax return analysis: from $749 a year for 30 households.
  • Jump, "the end-to-end AI platform built for advisors," for meeting notes: $100 per advisor a month, with add-ons at $50 each.
  • Wealth.com, for estate and tax documents: no public price.
  • Wealthbox AI Notetaker, inside the Wealthbox CRM: $49 per user a month on top of its $59 to $99 plans.
  • Zocks, "The AI Assistant for financial advisors," for notes without recordings and intake forms: $67, $117 or $184 per user a month, billed annually.

Jump, Zocks, Wealthbox, Holistiplan and Wealth.com state SOC 2 Type II, an outside audit of security controls, on their own pages. Ask each vendor for its report, and keep a vendor file on every tool that touches client data.

5. How to Choose in One Week

On day one, answer three questions with your CCO:

  1. Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace? Your suite adds a candidate: Copilot on Microsoft 365, Gemini on Google Workspace, where Google Vault can retain Gemini app chats on Business Plus and above (since June 11, 2026). Test it against Claude and ChatGPT on the same jobs.
  2. Which CRM and custodian? Ask each AI vendor in writing which of your systems its tool can read, and on which plan. Without a connection, your team pastes data in by hand.
  3. Do you need chats captured into your archive now? If yes, price the options with a feed: Claude Enterprise, ChatGPT Enterprise, or Microsoft 365 Copilot with an archive connector. If not yet, a plan without a feed can work, with a filing procedure your CCO signs.

On days two to four, run the same jobs, such as a meeting summary and a follow-up email, on each tool left, with client names removed. Decide on day five, in writing.

6. Where to Start

  1. Find out who already uses AI, and on which accounts.
  2. Run the one-week test, then pick one or two first jobs and write the rules before client data goes in.

The guide on where an RIA should start with AI ranks the first jobs; the one on whether Claude is compliant for SEC and FINRA lists the setup rules.

Where WorkWise fits

WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, works across Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Gemini and sells no licenses. Its AI Readiness Sprint makes the platform decision in one to two weeks, for $12,500 at firms of up to 20 people. Its Claude for Financial Advisors Setup costs $10,000 for 1 to 10 people, and its Secure Platform Rollout for ChatGPT Enterprise or Microsoft 365 Copilot starts at $25,000.

Ongoing help comes through the AI Operating Partner retainer, from $10,000 a month. Not a fit if you are a solo advisor who mainly wants better prompts: the smallest WorkWise project costs $7,500.

"We recommend Enterprise plans for registered investment advisers, because it includes the audit logs that support recordkeeping."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for financial advisors?

For running an advisory practice, Claude has the clearer case in November 2026, because Anthropic built a product for it: Claude for Financial Advisors, a plugin launched September 14, 2026 with connectors to advisor systems such as Wealthbox, Orion and Addepar. ChatGPT is the tool more advisors already use: 40.9% of respondents to the T3/Inside Information Software Survey 2026, against 6.2% for Claude. To archive chats, either needs its Enterprise plan. If your team mainly drafts emails and summarizes notes, pick the one your people already use (the full answer).

Can financial advisors use ChatGPT with client data?

Yes, on a business plan, and not on a personal account. On ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro, OpenAI says "data sharing is enabled by default," so chats can help train its models until each user turns off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, Data controls. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise are not used for training by default. Only Enterprise has the Compliance Logs Platform, which keeps logs for 30 days, so the firm's archive must download them continuously. A client email that ChatGPT drafted is a record under Rule 204-2, the SEC's books-and-records rule, once it is sent.

Who sets up AI for a small RIA?

A small RIA has three routes: the vendor's own setup guides and support, the firm's IT provider for accounts and permissions, or an AI advisor who also covers use cases, records and training. WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, is one such advisor. Its Claude for Financial Advisors Setup costs $10,000 for firms of 1 to 10 people, its Secure Platform Rollout for ChatGPT Enterprise or Microsoft 365 Copilot starts at $25,000, and its AI Operating Partner retainer for ongoing help starts at $10,000 a month. Licenses are bought from the vendor.
