TLDR: An AI consultant charges by the hour, by the project or by the month, and published rates differ by seller: Upwork says AI consultants on its marketplace generally cost $35 to $60 an hour, Clutch puts typical AI consulting rates at $125 to $300 an hour, and Go Fractional prices a fractional (part-time) Chief AI Officer at $8,400 to $14,000 a month. They measure different things, and none is a quote. Licenses come on top. WorkWise Solutions publishes every price; its usual first step is a $12,500 AI Readiness Sprint for firms of up to 20 people.

Pricing an AI consultant?

Every price I charge through WorkWise Solutions is on the pricing page, fixed before work starts. The usual first step is the AI Readiness Sprint: $12,500 flat for firms of up to 20 people, one to two weeks, ending in a vendor-neutral platform decision and a 90-day roadmap. I sell no licenses and take no referral fees.

1. The Short Answer

AI consultants charge in three ways: by the hour, a fixed price for a defined scope, or a monthly retainer. On published figures, AI consultants on Upwork's marketplace generally charge $35 to $60 an hour, Clutch puts typical rates at AI consulting firms at $125 to $300 an hour, and Go Fractional puts a fractional (part-time) Chief AI Officer at $8,400 to $14,000 a month.

These are market figures from named sources, read in November 2026. They measure different things, and none is a quote.

Market figures from the named sources, read November 2026. WorkWise figures from its own pricing page; WorkWise Solutions publishes this guide, and the Fits when column is its view.
How it is priced What the published numbers show Fits when
By the hour, freelance marketplace Upwork: generally $35 to $60 an hour; the most experienced $100 or more A small, defined task, with someone inside to manage it
By the hour, consulting firm Clutch: typically $125 to $300 an hour Short bursts of advice, with a cap on the hours
Fixed price, small project Upwork: readiness audit $1,500 to $4,000; strategy and roadmap $4,000 to $10,000. Clutch: discovery from around $15,000 One number for a defined scope, agreed before work starts
Fixed price, large program Clutch: end-to-end programs can pass $250,000 Many systems or companies at once, or a custom build
By the month, fractional AI leader Go Fractional: $8,400 to $14,000 a month at 14 hours a week (its own arithmetic) A senior person part time, every month
WorkWise Solutions (the publisher), fixed price AI Readiness Sprint $12,500 (up to 20 people); Comprehensive Discovery Sprint $30,000; Claude rollout $25,000 to $40,000; Executive Briefing $7,500; intensives $12,500 A small firm that wants a published price before the first call
WorkWise Solutions (the publisher), retainer $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000 a month, 3-month minimum The work is running and you want senior help on call

An hourly rate prices the hour. A fixed price prices the job.

2. Hourly Rates

Upwork's hiring guide is undated and cites "current data and industry sources." It says hiring an AI consultant there generally costs $35 to $60 an hour, "with the most experienced consultants charging $100 per hour or more."

Clutch's AI consulting directory puts typical hourly rates at $125 to $300. Clutch also says, "We may earn a fee for some placements."

They measure different markets, freelancers and firms, and either way the bill depends on how many hours the job takes.

3. Fixed-Price Projects

A fixed price is one number for a defined piece of work. Upwork's guide also lists a proof of concept build, a small working test, at $8,000 to $20,000.

According to Clutch pricing data, "smaller discovery engagements start around $15,000," and end-to-end AI programs can cost more than $250,000.

In the view of WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, a low hourly rate with no fixed scope puts the scope risk on the buyer, and a fixed price puts it on the seller.

A fixed price should come with these in writing:

  • The scope: which jobs, documents and people are covered.
  • The deliverables: what you own at the end, such as the data rule, the settings record, the workflows and the training materials.
  • The timeline, in weeks.
  • The exclusions, such as licenses, and whether the consultant resells licenses or takes referral fees.

As one example, the publisher's own fixed prices run from $7,500 for an Executive Briefing to $40,000 for a Claude rollout at a firm of 61 to 150 people.

Compare fixed prices only for the same scope.

4. Monthly Retainers and Fractional AI Leaders

A retainer buys ongoing help for a monthly fee. Go Fractional, a marketplace for fractional executives, gets its monthly range from its own arithmetic: hourly rates times a typical 14 hours a week times 4 weeks.

It reports an average of $206 an hour, with the middle 50% of rates from $150 to $250, based on 6 job posts and 427 candidate profiles from the last 90 days.

WorkWise Solutions' AI Operating Partner retainer costs $10,000 a month for Core, $15,000 for Plus and $20,000 for Embedded, a fractional Head of AI, with a 3-month minimum.

For context on hiring instead, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says, "The median annual wage for management analysts was $101,860 in May 2025." Management analysts is its category for consultants. The median for computer and information research scientists was $140,300, both before benefits.

Retainers suit work that is already running.

5. What You Pay Besides the Consultant

Licenses are a separate bill, paid to the software vendor:

  • Claude Team: $25 a standard seat a month, or $20 billed annually, for 2 to 150 members (Anthropic).
  • ChatGPT Business, the plan formerly called ChatGPT Team: $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly, with a 2-seat minimum (OpenAI).
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot: $30 per user per month paid yearly, on top of a Microsoft 365 license. Copilot Business costs $21, or $18 as a first-year promotion between July 1 and December 31, 2026, for Microsoft 365 Business customers (Microsoft).

Ten Claude Team seats billed annually cost 10 x $20 x 12 = $2,400 a year. Personal plans such as Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus run on consumer terms and are the wrong place for client or deal data.

Your people's time is the third cost: hours in training, then an internal owner's hours each week.

Budget the consultant, the licenses and the hours together.

6. Where to Start

  1. Write down the job: which documents, which people, which weeks.
  2. Ask two or three consultants for a fixed price on that same scope.
  3. Check the exclusions, then add the license line from the vendor's own price page.
  4. Add your people's hours, then compare totals.

What the work should include is in What Does an AI Consultant Actually Do?, and training prices are in the AI training cost guide.

Where WorkWise fits

WorkWise Solutions publishes every price on its pricing page, and each is fixed before work starts. The usual first step is the AI Readiness Sprint: $12,500 flat for firms of up to 20 people, one to two weeks, ending in a vendor-neutral platform decision and a 90-day roadmap. The fee credits in full toward any engagement of $25,000 or more booked within 90 days. For Claude setup and training, see the Claude Consultant page.

WorkWise sells no licenses and takes no referral fees. Not a fit if you need one small task done by the hour, which a marketplace freelancer may suit better.

"A fractional Chief AI Officer costs $8,400 to $14,000 per month at a typical 14 hours per week."

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AI consultant charge per hour?

Published hourly rates depend on who is selling. Upwork's hiring guide says AI consultants on its freelance marketplace generally charge $35 to $60 an hour, with the most experienced at $100 an hour or more. Clutch's AI consulting directory puts typical rates at consulting firms at $125 to $300 an hour. Go Fractional reports an average of $206 an hour for fractional Chief AI Officers, with the middle half of rates from $150 to $250. These are published market figures, read in November 2026, and none is a quote.

Is a fixed price or an hourly rate better for AI consulting?

For a defined first project, a fixed price is usually safer for the buyer. With an hourly rate and no fixed scope, the bill grows with every extra hour; with a fixed price, the consultant absorbs the overrun. Ask for the scope, deliverables, timeline and exclusions in writing, including whether licenses are extra. Hourly billing fits short bursts of advice, or a small task that someone inside can manage closely, such as work through a freelance marketplace.

What does a boutique AI consultant charge a small firm?

Boutique prices vary, so ask for a fixed number in writing. WorkWise Solutions, which publishes this guide, lists its prices: an AI Readiness Sprint costs $12,500 flat for firms of up to 20 people, a Claude rollout costs $25,000 for firms of 1 to 10 people up to $40,000 for 61 to 150, an Executive Briefing costs $7,500 and a hands-on intensive $12,500 for up to 12 people. Its AI Operating Partner retainer costs $10,000 to $20,000 a month. Licenses are billed separately by the vendor.
