Can financial advisors use Claude Pro with client data?

By Dr. Leigh Coney, Founder of WorkWise Solutions · Updated October 20, 2026

Short answer: You can, but Pro was built for individuals, and its gaps fall where an RIA's duties sit. Pro runs on Anthropic's consumer terms: your chats can be used to train models unless you turn that off, and there is no admin console, audit log or Compliance API. Anthropic's Data Processing Addendum, with its 48-hour breach notice, comes with the commercial plans, not Pro. For client data the floor is Team, at $20 a seat per month billed annually with a two-person minimum, and Anthropic recommends Enterprise for RIAs.

The plugin works on Pro. Anthropic's advisor page says it "works on paid Claude plans", and the merged Cowork experience reaches Pro and Max first. So solo advisors will try it there. The question is what the plan leaves out.

Four gaps matter for an RIA:

  • Training. On consumer plans, chats can help train Anthropic's models unless the user opts out, and with training on, de-identified data can be kept for up to 5 years. On Team and Enterprise, Anthropic's commercial terms say it "may not train models on Customer Content from Services."
  • Contract. Anthropic's Data Processing Addendum, with breach notice within 48 hours, is part of its commercial terms. Pro runs on consumer terms. Reg S-P expects you to oversee service providers that touch customer information, and the DPA is most of that evidence.
  • Records. Pro has no audit log and no Compliance API, so nothing flows to your archive.
  • Ownership. A Pro account belongs to the person. When an advisor leaves, the history leaves with them.

If you use Pro anyway, keep client identifiers out of it: draft a newsletter, test a prompt on the fictional household the plugin's onboarding uses, learn the tool. Turn off model training in the privacy settings first.

The cheapest fix is Team: $20 per seat per month billed annually, or $25 monthly, with a two-person minimum. It moves you onto commercial terms, with no training on your data by default, an admin console, connector controls and OpenTelemetry for Cowork. A solo advisor pays for two seats. Team still has no audit log export or Compliance API, which is why Anthropic recommends Enterprise for RIAs.

Enterprise is $20 per seat per month billed annually plus usage, with a 20-seat minimum. For a firm of eight, that floor is the real decision, and the small-RIA guide works through the math.

The riskiest setup is a common one: a firm on Team or Enterprise whose advisors also keep a personal Pro account for quick questions. That puts client data outside your archive and your policies. Your AI policy should rule it out in one sentence.

Want it set up for you?

I set it up for RIAs. Through WorkWise Solutions, the Claude for Financial Advisors setup covers the plan decision, the connectors, your firm's rules in the skills and archive capture, at a fixed price: $10,000 for firms of 1 to 10 people or $20,000 for 11 to 25, in two to four weeks.
